Amit Sheoran, former national wrestler, arrested in opium smuggling case

Amit Sheoran, a former national-level wrestler and 2013 National Cadet wrestling bronze medalist, has been arrested by the Delhi Police Crime Branch. Sheoran had been a proclaimed offender since December 2023 in connection with an opium smuggling case registered in Jharkhand.

Investigations revealed that Sheoran allegedly sourced opium from a Jharkhand-based supplier, Rajesh Nag, to distribute to wrestling training centres, known as akhadas, across Haryana and Delhi. The connection surfaced after Nag was arrested in April 2023 with nearly half a kilogram of opium and identified Sheoran as a primary receiver.

Sheoran was apprehended near the Madhuban Chowk Metro Station in Delhi following a coordinated manhunt involving technical surveillance and human intelligence. In addition to narcotics charges, Sheoran faces six criminal cases in Delhi and Jharkhand, including murder, conspiracy to commit murder, fraud, and violations of the Arms Act.
