Algeciras Mayor Landaluce faces sexual assault allegations and political backlash

Algeciras Mayor José Ignacio Landaluce is facing a legal and political crisis following a complaint filed by a Partido Popular (PP) militant with the Supreme Court. The complaint alleges two separate incidents of sexual assault occurring between December 2020 and the spring of 2021, one at a medical center owned by Landaluce and another within municipal buildings.

Landaluce has categorically denied the accusations and announced his intention to remain in office and run for re-election in the May 2027 municipal elections. The Supreme Court has requested a report from the Prosecutor's Office to determine if the case should proceed.

The political fallout has been immediate. The PP of Cádiz has distanced itself from the mayor, with provincial president Bruno García stating that Landaluce is 'outside the PP' and effectively ruling him out as a candidate for the party in 2027. Meanwhile, the PSOE in Andalusia has offered its support for a motion of censure to remove him from office, arguing that the current political situation in the municipality cannot continue.
