Amnesty International calls for ICE dissolution over human rights abuses
Amnesty International has called for the immediate dissolution of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), citing widespread human rights violations documented in a new report titled ‘We had whistles, they had guns’. The organization alleges that federal agencies, including ICE and Customs and Border Protection (CBP), have engaged in a pattern of abuses during large-scale immigration operations.
Based on over 150 testimonies collected between March and June, the report details incidents in Chicago, Minneapolis, New Orleans, and Washington, D.C. Documented abuses include arbitrary and discriminatory detentions, unlawful use of force, possible extrajudicial executions, and conditions that may constitute torture. The report specifically highlights the deaths of Renée Goud and Alex Pretti in Minneapolis and the injury of Venezuelan migrant Wilber García Pérez in Austin, Texas.
Amnesty International argues that these actions are part of a systemic approach to mass detention and deportation fueled by racist and xenophobic rhetoric. Nadia Daar, Executive Director of Amnesty International USA, stated that the agency is ‘inherently problematic and cannot be reformed’ due to the institutionalized nature of these violations.
