Amnesty International demands accountability for unidentified bodies in Imo State

Amnesty International has called on Nigerian authorities to account for hundreds of unidentified bodies reportedly being moved from mortuaries in Imo State to unknown destinations. The human rights group cited horrifying video footage showing the movement of numerous bodies, many of which are at a skeletal stage, during nighttime hours.

Reports indicate the bodies have been seen at Ngor Okpala General Hospital and Mbieri General Hospital. Isa Sanusi, Director of Amnesty International Nigeria, urged the Imo State Government and relevant authorities to establish the identities and causes of death for the deceased. He emphasized the need to explain how the bodies arrived at the mortuaries and where they are being relocated.

Amnesty International further called for an independent and impartial investigation into allegations that some of the deceased may have been victims of unlawful killings during security operations in the state. The organization stressed that all medical and mortuary records must be preserved to prevent interference with investigations and that families have a right to know the truth regarding their loved ones.
