Amnesty International unveils mural in Caracas honoring Carmen Navas
Amnesty International unveiled a mural at its Caracas headquarters to honor Carmen Teresa Navas, a prominent human rights defender. The artwork, created by artist Andrea d’Escriván, commemorates Navas and the families of victims of forced disappearances and arbitrary detentions in Venezuela.
Navas became a symbol of resistance after spending over a year seeking information regarding her son, Víctor Hugo Quero Navas, who died while in state custody. During the ceremony, representatives from various non-governmental organizations, including Justicia, Encuentro y Perdón and the Committee for the Freedom of Political Prisoners, emphasized the importance of preserving truth and dignity for victims of institutional abuses.
The initiative serves as a permanent record of civil society's resistance and a call for structural reforms to the justice system to ensure accountability and prevent future human rights violations.
