Mali ambush prompts Amnesty call for war crimes probe
Amnesty International announced on 29 July that it has examined twelve videos of a July 18 ambush in northern Mali, between the town of Anefis and the city of Gao. The attack, claimed by the al‑Qaida‑linked Jama’at Nusrat al‑Islam wal Muslimin (JNIM) and the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA), resulted in the deaths of at least 19 Malian soldiers, some of whom were shown with their hands behind their heads before being shot.
Amnesty’s senior Sahel researcher Ousmane Diallo said the footage clearly shows soldiers hors de combat being subjected to ill‑treatment and execution‑style killings, and called for an independent, impartial war‑crimes investigation. The United Nations human‑rights office has also urged a probe, stating the acts could amount to war crimes. Mali’s military issued a statement downplaying the incident, accusing circulating images of being used to portray a false victory.
The ambush follows a series of escalating assaults by JNIM and FLA, including an April raid that killed the defence minister and struck the country’s main airport. The surge in violence threatens the stability of Mali’s military‑led government, which came to power after coups in 2020 and 2021.
