Kyrnia village airstrike kills eight civilians in Mali
Human Rights Watch reported that Russia‑controlled Africa Corps carried out an airstrike on the village of Kyrnia in Mali's Mopti region on 15 June 2026. Two munitions were dropped by a Sukhoi Su‑24 aircraft, hitting first near the residence of the village chief – killing his wife, two of his children and another child – and then a nearby cattle market, where four men were killed.
The rights group said the strike killed eight civilians, including three children, and that no fighters from the al‑Qaeda‑linked JNIM group were among the casualties. It described the attack as "unlawfully indiscriminate" and called for an independent investigation, warning that Mali and its Russian allies could be held responsible for possible war‑crimes. Africa Corps posted aerial footage claiming it had struck a "gathering place of terrorist groups," but the footage was geolocated to Kyrnia. Russian and Malian authorities have not commented.
The incident adds to ongoing concerns about Russia’s expanding military role in the Sahel and the conduct of both Malian forces and their Russian allies in the long‑running conflict against Islamist insurgents.
