Amorgos authorities order immediate removal of shipwreck ‘RELAX 2’

An advisory committee has unanimously decided on the immediate salvage and removal of the shipwreck ‘RELAX 2’ from the Kalotaritissa area in southern Amorgos, Greece. The 15.40-meter British-flagged sailing vessel sank on the morning of August 29, 2026, after running aground in a shallow, rocky maritime zone.

The vessel has been classified as ‘dangerous and harmful’ due to its potential to pose a maritime navigation risk and threaten the marine environment. Authorities noted that approximately 150 liters of oil remain inside the ship and could not be pumped out, increasing the risk of environmental contamination.

The decision was reached during a meeting chaired by the Port Master of Naxos, with representatives from the Naxos Regional Unit, the Municipality of Amorgos, the Chamber of Cyclades, and the Amorgos Municipal Port Fund. The removal process is intended to proceed without delay to prevent environmental damage.
