Amours film explores patriarchy and female solidarity

Directed by Jérôme Bonnell, the film “Nel silenzio delle stanze” (Amours) is set in 1908 Normandy and is a candidate for the 2026 César and Lumière Awards. Based on the novel by Léonor de Récondo, the drama examines the decay of bourgeois society and the constraints of the patriarchy.

The story follows André de Boisvaillant, a notary, and his wife Victoire. After André forces a sexual encounter with their maid, Céleste, resulting in an unplanned pregnancy, the domestic power dynamics shift. While André attempts to justify his actions, a complex and unexpected bond forms between Victoire and Céleste. The two women develop a sense of complicity and intimacy that challenges the rigid social conventions of the era.
