Amphipoli’s Tomb of Kasta slated for 2028 public opening after extensive restoration

Restoration work at the ancient Macedonian burial mound known as the Tomb of Kasta in Amphipoli is progressing rapidly. The project has uncovered the full burial chamber, re‑installed the marble entrance door, completed flood‑protection works and begun construction of a museum shell that will house the monument. Parallel upgrades include a new protective shelter for the 6th‑century wooden bridge at Strymona, multimedia displays that “bring the bridge to life”, and a suite of accessibility improvements – wheelchair ramps, Braille signage, parking spaces and a lift for visitors with reduced mobility. The total investment for the Kasta tomb alone reaches about €20 million, part of a broader €25 million-plus programme funded by the EU Recovery and Resilience Fund and national budgets. Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni said the aim is to make Amphipoli an international archaeological destination comparable to Vergina, with the tomb scheduled to open to the public in early 2028, provided no further scientific issues arise.
