Pargat Singh appointed Punjab Congress president
Pargat Singh, a former Indian hockey captain and Jalandhar Cantonment MLA, has been appointed as the new president of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC). He replaces Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, who resigned following months of internal leadership disputes and factionalism within the state unit.
Singh’s appointment comes as the party prepares for the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections. The leadership change follows a period of tension involving senior leaders, including Charanjit Singh Channi. Outgoing president Raja Warring suggested that AICC in-charge Sachin Pilot may have played a role in the decision to replace him, though he noted he submitted his resignation voluntarily after meeting with Rahul Gandhi.
Sachin Pilot has backed the appointment, describing Singh as a ‘national icon’ and expressing confidence in his ability to lead the party. Meanwhile, political opponents, including members of the AAP and BJP, have criticized the move, questioning Singh’s past political associations and the party’s internal stability. Singh has pledged to work with dedication to strengthen the Congress organization and serve the people of Punjab.
