Amritprabha Mahanta released from jail following bail in Zubeen Garg death case

Amritprabha Mahanta, an accused in the death case of Assamese cultural icon Zubeen Garg, was released from Haflong sub-jail on Tuesday. Her release follows a Gauhati High Court decision on October 9, where Justice Pranjal Das granted bail upon the furnishing of a Rs 50,000 bond and two sureties of the same amount. Mahanta is the first accused to secure bail in the primary case regarding Garg's death.

Zubeen Garg, 52, died on September 19, 2025, while swimming in the sea off Singapore during the North East India Festival. The incident led to widespread protests in Assam and the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) by the state government. The SIT chargesheet named seven individuals, including Mahanta, festival organizer Shyamkanu Mahanta, manager Siddhartha Sharma, and bandmate Shekharjyoti Goswami, on charges of murder.

In its observations, the High Court noted that certain medical precautions for Garg appeared to have been violated prior to his death, suggesting he required a dedicated medical attendant due to his health conditions. However, the court stated that determining criminal liability for these alleged violations would be decided during the trial.
