Amritsar Police arrest five following shooting of ASI
Amritsar Rural Police have arrested five individuals in connection with a shooting targeting Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Jaswant Singh. The incident occurred around 8 PM while the officer was traveling home.
Following the initial attack, a joint operation involving local police and the Criminal Investigation Agency (CIA) led to an encounter in the Jhander police station area. During the operation, one suspect, identified as Karanbir Singh Nandi, allegedly opened fire on officers without provocation. In the ensuing exchange of fire, Nandi sustained injuries to his leg and chest; he later died at Civil Hospital, Jandiala. Another police constable was injured in the thigh during the encounter.
Police recovered a motorcycle, two pistols, and live cartridges from the scene. Investigators have identified another shooter, Gurpreet Singh (alias Gopi), and have also arrested individuals accused of providing the suspects with shelter and a hideout. Authorities stated that the operation was allegedly orchestrated by foreign-based handlers who lured the suspects with monetary incentives, with investigations currently probing links to a Pakistan-based handler.
