AMS report: 2025 sees record greenhouse gas and ocean heat levels

The American Meteorological Society (AMS) has released its 36th Annual State of the Climate report, confirming that greenhouse gas concentrations, sea level rise, and ocean heat reached historic maximums in 2025. The report, compiled by 625 scientists from 60 countries, highlights a continuous worsening of global climate indicators.

Atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide (CO2), methane, and nitrous oxide reached record levels. Global CO2 averaged 425.6 ± 0.1 parts per million, a 53% increase from pre-industrial levels. Fossil fuel emissions also hit a record high, estimated at 10.3 ± 0.5 petagrams of carbon per year, more than triple the levels recorded in the 1960s.

Global temperatures in both land and ocean areas were among the three highest recorded since the mid-19th century. Europe recorded its warmest year ever, while Russia, China, South Korea, and Argentina experienced their second warmest years.
