Amsterdam and AGV Water Board partner on aquathermia projects

The City of Amsterdam and the Amstel, Gooi and Vecht (AGV) Water Board have signed a letter of intent to strengthen their cooperation regarding sustainable heat derived from water, known as aquathermia.

As part of Amsterdam’s goal to become climate-neutral and gas-free, the partnership aims to utilize heat from canals, rivers, and treated wastewater. Existing projects in areas such as Amsterdam-West, Buikslotermeer, and the Sluisbuurt already demonstrate the potential of water as a heating source for buildings.

Sander Mager of the AGV Water Board emphasized that while water is a vital energy source, projects must be managed carefully to protect water quality, local flora and fauna, and ensure sufficient water flow for shipping. The agreement ensures continued intensive collaboration between the two entities following the split of Waternet.
