Amsterdam and Leiden face rising parking costs for residents

Residents in Amsterdam will face significant increases in parking permit fees starting next year. According to Alderman Elise Moeskops, permit costs in the West district will rise by 12.50 euros per month, while the city center will see an increase of 15 euros per month. Additionally, visitor discounts will be reduced from 65 percent to 40 percent. The municipality cited increasing pressure on public space due to urban growth and financial pressures from inflation and rising interest rates as primary drivers for the adjustment.

In Leiden, residents of the De Ananas apartment complex are facing a different parking crisis. The owner of the underground parking garage, Raad Vastgoed, has more than doubled monthly rents from 60 euros to 125 euros. Local political groups, including Pro Leiden and Partij Sleutelstad, have criticized the move, noting that residents are entirely dependent on private developers because the municipality no longer issues street parking permits for new developments.
