Amsterdam faces rising debt projected to reach 11 billion euros

Amsterdam is facing a significant increase in its debt burden, which is projected to reach approximately 10.9 billion euros by 2030. This represents an increase of over 3 billion euros from the estimated 7.8 billion euro debt at the end of 2025.

The municipality is primarily borrowing funds to finance large-scale investments. However, rising interest rates and potential credit limits from lenders are complicating this strategy. Major lenders, including BNG Bank and the Nederlandse Waterschapsbank, could face concentration risks if they lend too much to a single client, potentially affecting future financing terms.

The financial impact is already evident in rising interest costs. While Amsterdam paid approximately 105 million euros in interest in 2025, projections suggest this figure could rise to nearly 300 million euros annually by 2030.
