Amsterdam hosts ‘Stop de oorlogskoorts’ peace protest

Approximately 3,000 people gathered at Dam Square in Amsterdam for the ‘Stop de oorlogskoorts’ (Stop the War Fever) national peace protest. Organized by groups including De Nieuwe Vredesbeweging, FNV Young & United, and the Landelijke Studentenvakbond (LSVb), the demonstration targeted increasing militarization and government spending on defense.

Speakers criticized the potential for a large European military force and expressed opposition to providing support for the United States and Israel in the Gaza conflict. Organizers argued that military spending comes at the expense of the social welfare system and increased taxes for workers. Concerns were also raised regarding the possible introduction of compulsory military service, which protesters argued treats young people as ‘cannon fodder.’

Musical artists Eefje de Visser and the duo IJSLAND performed at the event. De Visser spoke against the financing of war and expressed concerns that increased European armament could escalate tensions with Russia. While protesters voiced opposition to military buildup, some speakers from Ukraine and Moldova noted that diplomacy alone may not end the conflict with Russia and emphasized the necessity of providing weapons to Ukraine.
