Amsterdam neighborhood unrest follows bonfire ban
Unrest broke out in the Floradorp district of Amsterdam-Noord after local residents reacted to the rejection of an alternative New Year's Eve bonfire plan. Amsterdam Mayor Femke Halsema denied a proposal by residents to hold a smaller fire in an open container, following safety advice from the fire department which deemed the plan too dangerous for a residential area.
During the disturbances in Sneeuwbalstraat, residents gathered and set fire to waste. When emergency services arrived to extinguish the flames, they were attacked with stones and fireworks, forcing police to intervene to protect first responders. Three individuals, including two minors, were arrested for vandalism. The situation in the neighborhood has since returned to calm.
