Amsterdam snack bar Fabel Friet faces legal battle over social media hype

The Amsterdam-based snack bar Fabel Friet is facing legal action from local residents following its rise to global fame via TikTok and Instagram. Since 2022, the establishment has become a major tourist destination, known for specialty fries topped with truffle mayonnaise and parmesan.

Local residents have taken the matter to court to seek the closure of the shop, citing several grievances caused by the influx of tourists. These issues include excessive litter, long queues that obstruct narrow sidewalks, and the presence of pests such as rats and seagulls attracted by food waste. Neighbors report that the crowds often prevent bicycles and cars from passing through the popular 'Negen Straatjes' area.

While city representatives expressed understanding regarding the residents' concerns, they noted in court that the business owners have complied with all existing regulations. Consequently, officials stated there is currently no legal basis to shut down the establishment.
