Amt transport crisis sparks political dispute in Genoa

The public transport company Amt is facing a financial crisis in Genoa, leading to a political dispute between Genoa Mayor Silvia Salis and Liguria Region President Marco Bucci. To prevent immediate service reductions and route changes before the winter schedule on September 14, the Municipality of Genoa has committed an additional injection of liquidity between 1.5 and 2 million euros. This will bring the city's total contribution to Amt to nearly 37 million euros.

Mayor Salis has called for a comprehensive review of the entire transport network, noting that the current system was designed forty years ago and no longer meets modern mobility needs. She has also urged the Region to fulfill its financial obligations.

In response, the center-right majority in the Liguria Region rejected Salis's accusations, characterizing them as obstructionist. Regional leaders stated they have already advanced 73 million euros for public transport and intend to reach 110 million euros by year-end. They also noted a commitment to support Amt's social capital with an additional 40 million euros once the Genoa Court approves the company's recovery plan. The regional administration criticized the Mayor for attacking the institution without relying on an officially approved 2024 budget.
