ÖAMTC warns Austrian drivers of foreign fines for expired inspection stickers

The Austrian automobile club ÖAMTC has reminded drivers that Austria allows a four‑month grace period after a vehicle inspection sticker (§ 57a) expires, but many neighbouring countries do not recognise this tolerance. In Italy, Hungary, Croatia, Slovenia, Turkey and other Balkan states drivers have faced fines or even plate removal at border checks.

ÖAMTC advises motorists to renew the inspection before travelling abroad. The inspection can be performed up to a month before the due date, and for campers, converted trucks and custom vans it can be done up to three months early. ÖAMTC lawyer Martin Hoffer highlighted that technical inspections are normally governed by the vehicle’s registration country, but discrepancies abroad can cause unexpected penalties.

Drivers planning summer road trips are urged to check their sticker validity to avoid delays and fines.
