ÖAMTC warns of increased driving risks from low autumn sun

The ÖAMTC has issued a warning regarding the increased danger posed by low-angle sunlight during the autumn months. As the sun sits closer to the horizon during morning and evening commutes, it can significantly restrict driver visibility, increasing the risk of accidents.

Traffic psychologist Marion Seidenberger notes that glare can make it difficult to detect brake lights, traffic signals, road markings, pedestrians, and cyclists. The risk is heightened when exiting tunnels or crossing bridges, and wet roads can further exacerbate light reflections. To mitigate these risks, experts recommend keeping sunglasses easily accessible and maintaining increased following distances from other vehicles.
