Amtrak Gulf Coast service sees high ridership amid safety concerns

Amtrak’s Gulf Coast service, known as the Mardi Gras line, is experiencing a period of significant growth and safety challenges during its first year of operation. Since its launch last August, the route connecting New Orleans and Mobile has more than doubled its initial ridership projections, contributing to regional tourism and economic development.

However, this success is tempered by safety concerns following five deadly crashes that resulted in seven fatalities. The incidents involved individuals crossing tracks in vehicles, attempting to maneuver around lowered gates, or walking along the rails.

In response, the Southern Rail Commission plans to collaborate with the Federal Railroad Administration over the coming year to study methods for reducing crash risks at rail crossings.
