Amtrak initiates $4.4 billion bridge redesign in Maryland
Amtrak has partnered with HNTB to begin the redesign of two critical bridges over the Bush and Gunpowder rivers in Maryland. This $4.4 billion initiative is part of a major effort to modernize the Northeast Corridor by replacing century-old structures with high-capacity, state-of-the-art bridges.
The projects are currently in the preliminary engineering phase, which includes environmental assessments under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and community engagement. The upgrades are expected to be completed by 2029. The Bush River bridge project is estimated to cost approximately $1.944 billion, while the Gunpowder River bridge project is estimated at $2.446 billion.
Once completed, the new structures will significantly increase operational efficiency and capacity. The upgrades will allow for higher train speeds, with the Bush River route designed for 160 mph and the Gunpowder River route for 145 mph, up from the current limit of approximately 125 mph. This infrastructure is intended to support a projected doubling of rail traffic over the next decade.
