Amtrak introduces new Airo trains to the Pacific Northwest

Amtrak is rolling out its $8 billion Airo program, introducing new trainsets to the Pacific Northwest. The first eight sets are designated for the Cascades route, which connects Seattle, Portland, and Vancouver, British Columbia.

These new trains aim to replace aging equipment that dates back to the 1970s. The Airo trainsets are expected to carry up to 317 passengers and reach top speeds of 125 mph, offering improved comfort, reliability, and environmental benefits compared to older models.

The upgrade is intended to provide a competitive alternative to driving along the Interstate 5 corridor. On the Seattle-to-Portland run, the rail service currently takes approximately three and a half hours, a duration comparable to driving time.
