Amtrak Mardi Gras service involved in fatal Alabama crash

A fatal collision involving Amtrak’s Mardi Gras service occurred near Theodore, Alabama, on Thursday morning. Authorities believe a vehicle carrying two passengers attempted to bypass crossing gates at the Bellingrath Road and Peary Road level crossing just before noon.

At the time of the accident, the train was traveling from New Orleans to Mobile, Alabama. This incident marks another fatality for the Mardi Gras service, which has been involved in six to seven deaths since it began operations on August 18, 2025. Despite safety concerns that previously delayed the return of passenger rail to the Gulf Coast, the line has seen high demand, exceeding forecasts with over 150,000 riders in its first year.

Local governments and the Southern Rail Commission have previously launched public safety campaigns to warn motorists and pedestrians about the dangers of attempting to bypass train barricades.
