Amtrak to build new Downeaster station in Portland, Maine

Amtrak has announced plans to relocate its Downeaster station in Portland, Maine, following the acquisition of a federal grant exceeding $40 million. The move aims to construct a state-of-the-art transportation center that allows passenger cars to remain on the mainline, thereby reducing the delays and disruptions caused by the current station at Thompson's Point.

While a specific location has not yet been finalized, several sites have been discussed. Previous considerations included the Mercy Hospital campus, though disputes with MaineHealth have impacted its viability. Other potential sites include St. John Street, despite existing congestion, or Cassidy Point, which could offer easier access to the Old Port and accommodate the new facility alongside a planned soccer stadium.
