AMTS Catania responds to worker assault at Nesima terminal

A dispute has emerged between the Catania transport company AMTS and the UGL labor union following a physical assault on an employee at the Nesima bus terminal.

According to UGL provincial secretary Giovanni Musumeci, the attack was the result of weeks of ignored warnings regarding an individual occupying the terminal and using staff facilities. The union claims that AMTS failed to prevent the incident despite previous reports of insecurity and inadequate sanitary conditions. UGL argues that the company has expanded service routes without ensuring the minimum safety requirements for workers.

In response, AMTS Catania has rejected accusations of negligence, stating that employee safety is a non-negotiable priority. The company maintains that the Nesima interchange is equipped with video surveillance and regular security patrols. AMTS clarified that the assailant, a foreign national who had been occupying the area, was arrested by law enforcement but has since been released by judicial authorities and was reportedly seen back at the terminal. The company stated that the issue is a matter of public order and social distress that falls outside its coercive powers, rather than a failure of corporate safety protocols.
