Amul expands U.S. dairy presence through local production partnership
The Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), which markets products under the Amul brand, has expanded its presence in the United States through a partnership with the Michigan Milk Producers Association (MMPA). This collaboration allows Amul to introduce its fresh milk range to the U.S. market for the first time outside of India.
Rather than importing milk from India, the model utilizes milk supplied by MMPA farmer members and leverages MMPA’s existing dairy infrastructure, processing technology, and packaging capabilities. Amul provides its specific brand formulations designed to match milk compositions familiar to Indian consumers. The product lineup includes Amul Gold (6% milk fat), Amul Shakti (4.5%), Amul Taaza (3%), and Amul Slim n Trim (2%).
Initially targeting specialty retailers and Indian grocery stores in the Midwest and East Coast, the brand has expanded into mainstream retail through Costco. Amul Gold entered Costco’s network in October 2024, with plans to expand availability across approximately 750 stores. The MMPA partnership provides access to a dairy cooperative operating across Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, and Wisconsin.
