Amur Gas Chemical Complex explosion causes fatalities at Russia-China plant
A massive explosion and fire struck the Amur Gas Chemical Complex in Russia's Far East, a $10 billion joint venture between the Russian petrochemical company Sibur and China's Sinopec. The incident occurred during final commissioning and testing phases at the facility, which was intended to become one of the world's largest producers of polyethylene and polypropylene.
Reports on the casualties vary. Some accounts indicate at least seven people have died, including six Chinese nationals and one Russian, with nine others missing. Other reports confirm one death and over 100 workers receiving medical treatment for various injuries. In total, as many as 152 people have required medical attention.
The fire reportedly originated in an auxiliary section of the plant's pyrolysis unit. While the blaze has been contained, the Russian Investigative Committee has launched an inquiry into the incident, specifically investigating potential violations of industrial safety regulations. The facility was scheduled to begin full production in 2027.
