Vivek Ramaswamy faces backlash over Ohio campaign ad featuring rival’s mother

Republican gubernatorial candidate Vivek Ramaswamy is facing intense bipartisan criticism following the release of an attack advertisement featuring Donna Arthur, the estranged mother of Democratic opponent Amy Acton. In the ad, Arthur calls Acton a “liar” and disputes her accounts of a childhood involving homelessness and sexual abuse by her stepfather.

Acton, a former Ohio health director, has stated she has not seen her mother since 1978. Her brother, Philip Stearns, condemned the advertisement as a “desperate, disgusting attack” that exploits childhood trauma. The Ramaswamy campaign confirmed responsibility for the ad and announced plans to spend $4 million on its continued broadcast.

The controversy has caused friction within the Republican Party. Ohio Governor Mike DeWine described the ad as “deeply, deeply troubling” and urged the campaign to remove it. Conversely, Donald Trump supported the decision to run the ad, while Vice President JD Vance praised Ramaswamy for his “audacity.”

Election forecaster Larry Sabato noted that the controversy may be impacting the race, with his Crystal Ball shifting the contest from a toss-up to “lean Democrat.”
