Amy Acton’s estranged mother featured in campaign attack ad

Republican gubernatorial candidate Vivek Ramaswamy has released a campaign advertisement featuring Donna Arthur, the estranged mother of Democratic candidate Amy Acton. In the ad, Arthur calls Acton a “liar” and urges voters not to support her.

Court records reveal that Arthur was previously convicted of animal neglect in Pennsylvania in 2021. The case involved four five-day-old kittens found locked inside her vehicle, where interior temperatures reached approximately 120 degrees Fahrenheit. One kitten died from heat exhaustion, according to testimony from a local nonprofit worker. While an appellate court recently vacated the conviction and sentence due to a procedural error regarding counsel, the ruling did not overturn the merits of the case.

Acton has publicly addressed her difficult upbringing, stating that her mother lost custody of her at age 12 due to neglect and child abuse. Acton also alleged that her stepfather, Cledith Arthur, sexually abused her for years. The campaign ad has drawn bipartisan criticism for utilizing Acton’s childhood trauma and featuring an estranged family member with a criminal record.
