Amy-Jill Levine, a Jewish biblical scholar, has been elected president of the Catholic Biblical Association of America (CBA) for the 2026-2027 term. This marks the first time a Jewish person has held the presidency since the organization was founded in 1936.

Levine, a specialist in the New Testament and an Orthodox Jew, was elected during the association's 88th annual meeting held at Loyola University Maryland in Baltimore. She has been a member of the CBA since 1988 and previously served as vice president, a board consultant, and an editor for the journal ‘The Catholic Biblical Quarterly’.

While the CBA is a scholarly society rather than a Vatican institution, its statutes require that its work aligns with the Catholic Magisterium. The association also provides biblical advisory services to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. Levine’s background includes being the first Jewish scholar to teach a New Testament course at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome and having held three audiences with Pope Francis.
