Amy Winehouse’s 15‑Year Anniversary: Mother’s Tribute and Legacy

July 23 2011 marked the death of British singer Amy Winehouse at age 27, ruled as accidental alcohol poisoning in her Camden home. Fifteen years later, her mother Janis Winehouse told The i Paper that her daughter “was a victim of her own success,” adding that Amy’s lack of confidence drove her to alcohol, which she used to numb pain.

The family commemorated the date with a free tribute concert at Camden Market, a visit to Amy’s grave and continued promotion of the Amy Winehouse Foundation. The charity runs resilience programmes in schools and operates Amy’s Place, a recovery house for young women with substance‑use issues. Janis said she is simply “getting on with life,” while the foundation preserves Amy’s musical legacy and supports those struggling with addiction.

The anniversary also renewed public interest in Amy’s influence on artists such as Adele, Lady Gaga and Lana del Rey, and reminded the industry of the pressures that can accompany rapid fame.
