An Garda Síochána social media accounts compromised for cryptocurrency promotions
Two official social media accounts belonging to An Garda Síochána, Ireland’s national police service, were compromised to promote cryptocurrency. The affected accounts, @GardaTraffic and @GardaInfo, which serve public information and traffic update functions, lost their official branding and began posting cryptocurrency advertisements.
@GardaTraffic has approximately 600,000 followers, while @GardaInfo has nearly 300,000. The breach has raised concerns regarding the security of official police digital identities and the potential for public confusion, as these accounts are typically trusted for safety guidance and road alerts. While the incident suggests a compromise, it remains unclear if the accounts were hacked, accessed via internal error, or through unauthorized misuse of connected services.
