An Giang faces waste management crisis and riverbank erosion

An Giang province is facing significant environmental and geological challenges, including severe waste management issues and riverbank erosion. The province generates approximately 2,274 tons of solid domestic waste daily, with rural collection rates (63.1%) lagging significantly behind urban areas (94.6%). Currently, An Giang faces an environmental debt of roughly 2.5 million tons of accumulated waste, including 630,000 tons located in open-air dumpsites that pose risks to groundwater and air quality.

While provincial planning aims to increase waste processing capacity to between 4,910 and 6,710 tons per day by 2030, progress is hindered by administrative and technical obstacles. Only three waste treatment plants are currently operational, and several approved projects are stalled due to land procedures, fire safety regulations, and contract disputes.

Simultaneously, the province is struggling with land subsidence and erosion. Since the beginning of 2026, 35 incidents of riverbank and canal erosion have been recorded, affecting 1.7km of shoreline and necessitating the relocation of 45 homes. To combat these natural disasters, provincial authorities have proposed requesting nearly 7 trillion VND in government support to fund 18 priority embankment projects.
