Ana Brnabić defends Serbia’s sovereign foreign policy and EU aspirations
Ana Brnabić, President of the National Assembly of Serbia, has asserted that Serbia is a European nation committed to joining the European Union while maintaining its sovereign right to independent decision-making. In an article published in the British newspaper The Telegraph, Brnabić addressed characterizations of Serbia as a country caught between the interests of Brussels, Washington, Moscow, and Beijing.
She argued that Serbia’s economic cooperation with China and its diplomatic relations with Russia and the United States do not negate its European aspirations. Brnabić emphasized that the European Union is Serbia’s largest trading partner and that the country’s economy is deeply integrated into the European market.
To support the argument for Serbia’s strategic autonomy, Brnabić cited domestic economic indicators, noting that in 2025, real average wages rose by 7.1 percent, the unemployment rate stood at 8.7 percent, and exports increased by 8.4 percent. She maintained that economic connectivity with various global powers should be viewed as a business interest rather than a sign of geopolitical alignment.
