Ana Brnabić set to assume Serbia’s acting presidency as Vučić plans resignation

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić, barred by the constitution from seeking a third term, is expected to resign within weeks. Under the Serbian constitution, the speaker of the National Assembly becomes acting president upon a vacancy. As the current speaker, Ana Brnabić will therefore assume the role of acting president.

Brnabić, who previously served as prime minister and is widely seen as a close ally of Vučić, is expected to hand over the mandate for a new government to Vučić, after which the parliament will confirm the cabinet. This transition is designed to keep Vučić’s influence over Serbian politics intact through the end of the current parliamentary term, projected to run until mid‑2028. The move follows a pattern in which Brnabić has acted as a political “bridge” for Vučić’s continued dominance.
