Ana González proposes reforms to Mexico's General Health Law

Federal Deputy Ana González González has proposed reforms to the General Health Law in Mexico to protect children and adolescents from lead exposure and other environmental contaminants. The initiative aims to prevent, detect, and control exposure that can lead to permanent neurological damage, decreased IQ, learning disorders, and cardiovascular or renal issues.

The proposal includes establishing periodic environmental monitoring in schools located in industrial or high-risk zones to ensure classrooms are free from heavy metals. It also calls for the creation of national protocols for immediate medical attention in cases of lead poisoning and mandatory screening for children under six, pregnant women, and high-risk populations.

Under the proposed changes, the Ministry of Health and state governments would be required to formulate specific programs to address the harmful effects of lead and implement permanent epidemiological surveillance to protect the well-being of minors.
