Ana Maria Gonçalves to represent Luiza Mahin in Grande Rio 2027 parade

Writer Ana Maria Gonçalves, author of ‘Um defeito de cor’, has been invited by the Grande Rio samba school to participate in the 2027 Carnival parade at Sapucaí. She will represent the historical figure Luiza Mahin, a symbol of Black resistance in 19th-century Brazil.

The parade theme, titled ‘Sankofa Tabon – os retornados da Costa do Ouro e a Estrela Negra da Liberdade’, is developed by carnival designer Antônio Gonzaga. The theme explores the African diaspora and the return of freed Africans to the Gold Coast, located in present-day Ghana.
