Anabel Fernández Sagasti proposes remote voting for pregnant senators

Senator Anabel Fernández Sagasti has introduced a resolution to modify the regulations of the Argentine Senate to allow remote voting for female legislators facing high-risk pregnancies. The proposal aims to permit virtual participation for those with medical certificates proving they cannot travel due to health risks.

The initiative follows a recent incident during a vote on the Land Law, where Fernández Sagasti, currently in her 32nd week of pregnancy, was unable to vote in person due to medical recommendations against air travel. Although she initially received authorization from Vice President Victoria Villarruel, the Senate ultimately voted to refer her request to a commission, resulting in the province of Mendoza losing a vote in that specific legislative decision.

Supporters emphasize that the measure is not a general privilege but a specific exception based on objective medical criteria, similar to the bimodal parliamentary operations used during the pandemic.
