Anaconda Biomed raises US$56M for stroke treatment technology

Anaconda Biomed, a Spain-based medical device company, has secured US$56 million in financing to advance its mechanical thrombectomy catheter portfolio. The funding round was led by Omega Funds, with participation from new investor FOCO—a co-investment fund established by the Spanish government and managed by the Spanish Development Finance Company (COFIDES)—as well as existing investors Asabys, Ysios Capital, and CDTI.

A significant portion of the capital will be used to complete the ATHENA pivotal investigational device exemption (IDE) study. This study evaluates the ANA funnel catheter, which is designed to treat acute ischaemic stroke by combining aspiration with flow arrest and flow reversal to improve clot capture and prevent embolic material from moving into downstream vessels.

The company aims to address challenges in the large vessel occlusion stroke market. According to Anaconda, ischaemic stroke accounts for approximately 65% of the seven million annual stroke deaths globally.
