Anadegas fuel stations may suspend card payments in Dominican Republic
The National Association of Gasoline Retailers (Anadegas) has announced that its affiliated fuel stations may suspend electronic card payments starting September 25. This measure affects approximately 780 stations, representing about 75% of the 1,038 fuel stations in the Dominican Republic.
Anadegas president Juan Elías Pérez stated the decision is a protest against high transaction costs, claiming that electronic payment services can consume up to 27% of gross profits, which compromises business operations. While the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and MSMEs and Pro Consumidor have attempted to mediate, the association claims no favorable agreement has been reached with banking representatives.
Public transport drivers have expressed mixed reactions. While many drivers primarily use cash, some expressed concern that the move could negatively impact consumers who rely on debit and credit cards for security reasons or convenience.
