Anadegas suspends Verifone disconnection plan in Dominican Republic

The National Association of Gasoline Retailers (Anadegas) has suspended its plan to disconnect Verifone electronic payment terminals from 780 affiliated gas stations in the Dominican Republic. The association had previously issued an ultimatum to disconnect the services by Friday, September 25, if a resolution regarding high transaction commissions was not reached.

Anadegas president Juan Elías Pérez argued that electronic payment commissions consume approximately 27% of retailers' gross profits, a cost he claims is among the highest in a 34-country regional comparison. The group sought a reduction in fees or a fixed transaction rate to protect their regulated profit margins.

Following a mediation meeting with the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and MSMEs (MICM), led by Minister Eduardo Sanz Lovatón, the association agreed to a 'waiting period.' The decision to maintain card payments was made after officials reported that negotiations with the national banking sector have reached an advanced stage. The government and Pro Consumidor have expressed commitment to finding a solution that resolves the dispute without impacting consumer payment options.
