Anadia rehabilitation clinic investigated for torture and mistreatment

A joint task force led by the Public Ministry of Alagoas (MPAL) discovered severe cases of torture, mistreatment, and unsanitary conditions at the “Comunidade Jesus Te Ama” rehabilitation clinic in Anadia, Brazil. The inspection, prompted by anonymous reports, involved the Federal Police, the Labor Public Ministry, and health surveillance agencies.

Investigators confirmed that residents were subjected to degrading conditions, including being tied up for days and denied food. Reports indicated that patients were being drugged with excessive medication and served spoiled food. The facility also lacked proper medical or sanitary oversight for residents with physical, mental, or psychiatric disabilities.

Prosecutor Viviane Farias described the site as a place that should provide care but instead uses violence. She noted that some residents were kept in a specific room for containment, sometimes remaining tied up for up to three days. While allegations of slave labor were investigated, the Labor Public Ministry noted that some residents were performing unpaid construction and renovation work on the clinic's facilities.
