Anadolu University hosts international Ottoman music workshop

As part of the Corpus Musicae Ottomanicae (CMO) project, a two-day workshop was held on September 8-9 for the 2026 Summer Academy. The event was a collaboration between Anadolu University, Münster University, and the Orient-Institut Istanbul.

Led by Prof. Esra Berkman, the workshop involved 22 international participants and focused on the precise microtonal representation of Ottoman maqam music. The sessions explored the use of 79-tone tuning and Sagittal notation, comparing them with Hampartsum and Western staff notation systems.

The academy concluded with a performance by the Anadolu Makam Ensemble. The ensemble performed six works that had been transcribed by Prof. Dr. Ozan Yarman using Sagittal notation to accommodate the 79-tone system. Notably, the pieces ‘Saba Murassa Peşrev’ and ‘Beste-Isfahan Peşrev’ were performed for the first time. The ensemble included Prof. Esra Berkman on kanun, Assoc. Prof. Meriç Düzbaş on kudüm and vocals, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yasin Bol on oud and vocals, and Lecturer Onur Üstünkaya on ney.
