Anaga abandoned reservoirs threaten protected Cory's shearwaters

Local police and environmental officials in Anaga have discovered an abandoned water reservoir that is acting as a lethal trap for the Cory's shearwater, a protected bird species in the Canary Islands. During inspections in the Los Orovales and Las Breñas areas, authorities found numerous bird skeletons inside a reservoir located under the debris of the Roque del Aderno east face.

Experts believe that disoriented birds, particularly young ones currently leaving their nests, fall into the structure and are unable to escape. Officials have requested urgent intervention from the Cabildo de Tenerife to seal, cover, or close the infrastructure to prevent further deaths. A second, smaller tank filled with waste was also located nearby, prompting calls for the identification of landowners to ensure both sites are properly fenced or secured.
