Anaga Biofest promotes regenerative tourism in Spain
The Anaga Biofest, originating in Tegueste, Tenerife, serves as a model for transforming protected natural spaces into tourist attractions through regenerative tourism. The initiative focuses on participatory experiences, environmental conservation, and collaboration with local communities without requiring massive infrastructure investments.
Coordinated by Ecoturismo Ideas Regenerativas, the festival connects visitors directly with biodiversity actions. Since 2021, the project has facilitated the construction of over 200 nesting boxes for the Canary Island tit and other local insectivorous birds. The sixth edition of the festival includes programming across Tenerife, La Gomera, and Gran Canaria.
The model emphasizes small-scale actions and measurable results to address concerns regarding greenwashing. The project has received several accolades, including the UNESCO MaB Spain Biosphere Recognition 2022 and the Magallanes-Elcano Social Innovation Award.
