Anak Krakatau expands land area following September eruptions
Anak Krakatau has undergone significant physical expansion following a series of continuous eruptions in early September 2026. According to data from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG), the volcano's land area increased by approximately 32.8 hectares due to the accumulation of lava flows and pyroclastic material between September 4 and September 6.
Satellite imagery from Sentinel has also identified the emergence of two new small land masses or mounds located in the northwest and southeast sectors of the volcano. These formations are believed to be accumulations of volcanic material rather than independent volcanoes with their own magma systems.
The recent volcanic activity caused significant disruption, with ash plumes reaching altitudes of up to 15,000 feet, leading to the closure of several airports and the disruption of thousands of flights. Authorities have established safety zones, prohibiting activities within a 2km radius of the main crater and a 1km radius of the new land formations. Field surveys are scheduled for October 2026 to further investigate the nature of these new land masses.
