Anak Krakatau transitions to Strombolian eruption phase

Anak Krakatau has transitioned from a period of continuous eruption to a Strombolian phase, characterized by more episodic activity. While the intense eruption phase ended in early September 2026, volcanic ash remains detectable in regions such as Banten, West Java, and Jakarta due to atmospheric wind patterns carrying fine particles.

Experts from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation report that the volcano is currently undergoing rapid constructive growth. This growth is driven by regional tectonics, a mature magma system, and high-temperature, low-viscosity magma. Despite the rapid development, officials state that the current height of approximately 150 meters and the gentle slope of the volcano mean that any potential collapses are unlikely to trigger tsunamis. Monitoring remains ongoing as the volcano continues its natural developmental cycle.
